Carrying on E-Mail Conversations in a Sharp Tone With a Combative Acquaintance
Many folks are unable to control themselves in e-mail debates, and when they find themselves intellectually challenged, they often lashed out at the other party. Still, to keep the proper dialogue open it makes sense to figure out a way to handle such combative dialogue. There is no sense losing an acquaintance, or friend by e-mail, merely because they let their temper get the best of them when discussing issues they are so personally and emotionally involved in.

If someone cares so deeply about a certain subject, or adamant about a certain cause, it is easy for them to step out of the balance of a normal conversation and take a combative, aggressive, or even a belligerent position. So, what should you do if this happens? Well, what I recommend is that you go along with the other party and see if they calm down a little bit, even let them know you understand their position, even if you don’t agree.
You might even try saying something like this; “Hey that was a fun conversation. What else you got? I am enjoying your discussion we can continue in this harsh-tone method or the more mellow conversation, your choice, or you can mix it up, some of each, whatever you prefer.” In other words, invite them to continue the conversation and let them pick the tone of the dialogue, debate, discourse, or discussion.
Sometimes, people need to get things off their chest, they need a sounding board, and they need to explain their positions on their own terms. So, if they carry a harsh tone, let them and listen to what they have to say, even if you think they are completely off their mark, or don’t know what they’re talking about. This is proper e-mail etiquette when dealing with someone that has lost their temper online. Please consider all this.
