Scrapbooking Tools and Supplies

Scrapbooking has been around since the 15th century and has long since become an art form. Unfortunately, for those who painstakingly wrote and painted beautiful pages representing special moments in their lives, the paper on which they wrote and the glue or tape used to keep items in place, faded and decayed.

Scrapbooking of today is no less of an art form, but there are tools that can be used that will preserve memories for generations to come. The paper should be acid-free, lignin-free and ink used should be pigment-based which is fade resistant and colorfast. Plastic sleeves are also a good idea to protect the beautiful pages created.

Adhesives used in scrapbooking have been known to corrode and damage paper and photographs on the page. Today, many scrapbookers wishing to preserve the pages into which they put so much effort use one of these adhesives: 1) acrylic-based, synthetic adhesive; or 2) wheat or rice starch paste. Both of these adhesives can be purchased at any craft store that has scrapbooking supplies.

Many photo albums and scrapbooks don’t stand the test of time. Have you ever seen an old photo album that has yellowed and faded, on which the written words used to describe the person and the scene of the photo that meant so very much to the person who wrote them, are so faded that the words can no longer be read?

The purpose of scrapbooking is to give us the gift of memories preserved. We may remember birthday parties from our childhood, but do we remember the names of the children we invited or the wonderful gifts we received that perhaps gave us great joy as a child? Do we remember the party favors that were given to guests? These are things that embellish and enhance our memories, enabling us to go back in time and if only for a short time, be back in the memory, experiencing the joy as though it were only yesterday. Scrapbooking is a venue in which to create such memories.

Scrapbookers go to great lengths to preserve our memories and creating each page of a scrapbook, even with the tools available today designed to make the experience enjoyable and simpler, is a labor of love. Mothers and fathers know how important memories are. Children live their lives simply without concern of the past, but adults have a different understanding of the world and how invaluable simpler times were. Simpler times exist only for children and it is our job as adults to facilitate the preservation of those memories.

Whether children realize the impact of those memories or not, they can still enjoy scrapbooking and, without even realizing it, contribute to the preservation of their childhood. Scrapbooking, which can be as elaborate and complicated as we wish, can also be fun and easy to do. There are so many materials available that can embellish keepsakes. Why just write text when you can write it in a fun call out or bubble, bringing a smile to anyone who sees it.

Scrapbooking can renew the emotions of a memory. We can look at a scrapbook page and laugh or smile, feeling the warmth of a beautiful day, just from looking at a page that was created just for a special occasion making it last forever.
