Supplies You Need to Make Beaded Jewelry

‘Trevors Tips’

Hi and welcome to beads and bits! Today I’d like to talk to you about crimping stainless steel wire and finishing components on necklaces. Firstly we need to talk about the tools required in order to carry out this simple task. When first starting out jewellery making the best tools to purchase initially are….. Flat nose pliers (also sometimes called chain nose pliers)

Side cutter pliers

Now you will need to have to hand….. Stainless steel wire (aka: Tiger Tail) A Lobster Clasp ( see picture below)

Beads (of your choice) Crimp Beads Ok…. now your ready to start……

Firstly cut yourself a length of tiger tail wire to approximately 22 inches. This will allow for a finished necklace length of around 18 inches.

Slide one crimp bead onto the wire until it reaches 2 inches before the end of the wire. At this point hold it in place with your fingers and push the 2 inch tail end of your wire through your lobster clasp and then return it back and push it back through your crimp-bead.

Then slide the crimp+bead tight up against the bottom of your lobster clasp and use your chain nose pliers to flatten the crimp*bead. In effect squashing it flat onto the wire to create a friction bond with the wire.

You then need to thread your beads onto your wire into the design you have chosen. Stopping two inches short of the end of the wire. At which point you will slide on another crimp bead and return the end of the wore back through the cb leaving a loop of wire approximately 10 mm long. Then flatten the cb with your chain nose pliers. This will give you a loop to attach to the lobster clasp on the other end. Trim off excess wire with your side cutter pliers.
